The last stretch 09/27/04

Well, I can’t believe it. We’ve been shooting and shooting for what seems like forever. On some days it feels like it will never end. On other days it feels like it’s just begun. But not things are feeling like they’re about to end. Today is day 34. I think we have about 10 more days left. Can you believe it?

Sure, it is exciting knowing we are approaching the finish line for production, but there is a sense of panic and fear at the same time. The haunting question becomes louder and stronger every day now. Did we get everything we needed? Are there any shots we forgot to film? Do we have all the scenes? Is there some error in continuity or oversight in the footage that won’t show up until the edit?

Besides our Singaporean actors, Tan Kheng Hua and Dickson Tan, all our others actors jump on airplanes and never come back. This means what we’ve shot is what we’ve shot.

I am now spending my last sacred moments off set in the edit studio (Frameworks) with the editor, Geneveve. Assembly of our daily work has been an ongoing process since the beginning of our shoot. This has been really helpful for me to see on a daily basis what we captured, and what we have in the can. It’s been very helpful to see the lighting, the movement and the tempo when considering the following or proceeding scenes that are to come.

Assembly happens every day, but now I am finally taking time during the off hours of shooting to start (and I stress…START) doing the edit. The process of editing is a beast all it’s own. The approach I take his to assemble, then roughly edit, and then, start looking at sequences together…almost like mini stories. This is where we are right now. Each sequence has a beginning, middle and end. Each sequence has a high and low, a peak, a climax, a opening, and an ending.

So, we have 10 days left…and this next ten days will also mark the first 10 days of edit. Let’s see how it goes. I can say this for now…

I have always had a trust for the story. I have always believed in the journey. But my vision and what I have seen in our dailies far exceeds my expectations. I am so excited about the final product. It is going to be great. This I know.
