Home again... 07/09/04

I was far far away from home when I was in LA. I never knew how big America was until I stepped into the city of Los Angeles. Being in a whole new place for me was like being in a dream. The sky was so blue, the driver’s seat was on the opposite side, and so were the roads. There were so many cars! There were hardly any tall buildings and palm trees were everywhere. I learned about the different cultures in the city. Sometimes it was not easy to get around, as there were so many main roads, and things there were expensive!

Working in LA was tough, as I had to get used to the locals and their ways of living. It was a different experience for me as they had their own ways of working things out.

I was quite relieved when the two months were finally over and I was able to go back to my homeland, Singapore. LA was nice, but I never felt more at home than when I got back to Singapore, the place where I have been living ever since I was born. I smiled when I saw the first glimpse of the HDB flats since my trip. I felt comfortable as my dad drove through those oh-so-familiar roads. I was glad to speak my local lingo singlish to my family and friends and I felt at ease saying ‘Lah’ to strangers.

I feel that Singapore is so safe and secure. This was one thing that I took for granted about my country. I now know what foreigners mean when they describe Singapore as ‘Clean’. I also began to cherish the different cultures and roads like Chinatown, Serengoon, Geylang for the Malay, Chinese and Indian races.
