Chirping for CAGES
09/16/04
It finally happened. The Song Bird competition is finally here. The script calls for a song bird competition. We decided to run an actual competition rather than staging one. What results is one of the biggest logistical challenges we have ever had. 2 teams have to be set-up: event team and production team. Tania is the only person who needs to look into both. You can see her run around the locations with 2 sets of walkie-talkie.
The hustle and bustle of actual song bird competition is captured. Enthusiasm is high. Bird owners are anxious to get their birds up. Crane shot has to be done slowly and gracefully so that it does not frighten the bird.
The competition started about 9AM in the morning. The whistle was blown and birds started chirping. Residents from the surrounding area came with curiosity. TV and press cover the news. Excitements build up. Our friends from SAVH (Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped) came to provide massage services for tired bird owners. Johnny Ang (a renowned mouth and foot artist) graced the event by exhibiting his paintings. Indergit Singh (member of parliament for Ang Mo Kio) blessed the event with his kind words and encouragement. Jessica Callahan, Cages theme song artist, concluded the event with a one-hour concert featuring some of her popular songs.
I can only describe the event as “electrifying” as the event is not only created for the production of the movie, but it is also an ability awareness event. Many of us are disabled in one way or the others. If we can all focus on our abilities instead of disabilities, I am sure the world will be a wonderful place to live for all of us.
